Healing Instructions
Follow these aftercare instructions to ensure your tattoo heals properly and looks its best.
1
The First 24 Hours
- —Leave the bandage or wrap applied by your artist on for 2–4 hours, or as directed.
- —When removing the bandage, wash your hands first, then gently remove it under warm running water.
- —Wash the tattoo with clean hands using a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not use a washcloth or loofah.
- —Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.
- —Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo-specific aftercare ointment.
2
Days 2–7
- —Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily with mild, fragrance-free soap.
- —Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion after each wash. Do not over-moisturize.
- —Your tattoo may begin to peel or flake — this is normal. Do not pick or scratch.
- —Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to avoid irritation.
- —Avoid soaking the tattoo in water — no swimming, baths, or hot tubs.
3
Weeks 2–4
- —Continue moisturizing daily as the tattoo continues to heal.
- —The outer layers of skin will finish peeling and the tattoo may look slightly dull — this is normal.
- —Avoid direct sun exposure on the tattoo. If you must be in the sun, apply SPF 50+ sunscreen.
- —Do not scratch or pick at any remaining flaking skin.
- —The tattoo is fully healed when the skin feels smooth and the colors look vibrant again.
4
Things to Avoid
- —Direct sunlight and tanning beds during healing.
- —Swimming pools, oceans, lakes, and hot tubs.
- —Picking, scratching, or peeling the skin.
- —Tight clothing rubbing against the tattoo.
- —Petroleum-based products like Vaseline.
